FALL 2016 - The following videos walk you through installation of the DuIK plug-in for After Effects, and basic use. There are MANY more tools in DuIK, and you are encouraged to use DuIK's own user manual to learn them. For the character animation, however, we will only be using the inverse kinematic tools covered in these videos.

This is a SUPER fast file set-up for Photoshop CCto make both frame-by-frame animations exported as .mp4/.mov files, and also for exporting animated .gifs.
I made some revisions to the coursework and the labs are now running Adobe CC, so some updated material is necessary!

In this first video, I summarize how to search for a sound on Freesound.org, and how to assure that it is Creative Commons 0. All sounds downloaded from Freesound.org for this class MUST be licenses Creative Commons 0.

In this next video, I discuss the basic workflow of creative an ellipse with bezier curves in After Effects CC, and then approaching the animation tonmake a bouncing ball, focusing on manipulation of the bezier curves. The final result will look something like this:

The first part of the workflow is this:

The second part of the workflow, utilizing the graph editor, is this:

Finally, we will be exporting our videos using the H.264 codec. Due to some "hiccups" on some machines when working with Adobe Media Encoder, we'll be creating a custom render through AE. We will come back to Adobe Media Encoder later in the semester, however. The rendering workflow is as follows:

This will help you figure out the best way to approach putting it together, and will also alert you to any problems with the unfolding.

In my example, I did it on regular letter size laser printer paper and used good old scotch tape. But if you're a big coffee drinker (or otherwise jittery-handed person like myself), it's not a bad idea to print it larger. Also, some brands of glue sticks set very quickly and might work, but you don't want to use any kind that allows any sort of "repositioning".

The camera ran out of battery, but it doesn't matter much since the 4 mil plastic was simply too stiff to work at this scale along with my tiny air pump. I suspect at a much larger scale, and with a box fan, the 4 mil might have worked just fine. Anyway, at this scale: definitely 2 mil thick plastic sheeting.

And I'm fairly certain good ol' sewn fabric filled with stuffing would have worked even better. I'm sort of over the "Q" (don't tell my son, Quinn!) but I'll post it if I get something together.

Will it work in the UNCC labs? Guess we'll find out tomorrow...

To download the Flattery Plug-In, go to http://www.pumpkinpirate.info/flattery/. Be sure to read the "Read Me" file to know where exactly to place the files.

And because this video was fast-cheap-dirty (watch my power rapidly run out), this is a very nice tutorial on how to use Flattery: http://www.artofraz.com/free-art-tutorials/papercraft-with-google-sketchup/.

And when you get annoyed with my video tutorial, here's a very interesting application:
Making a brass watercolor box.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFXzwoZDeyI

And another video time-lapse (just to prove that I'm not that annoying after all.)
